Looks like it might be a thing.

I'm deeply concerned about how British establishments use the term "independent" though. An independent committee always awards MPs enormous annual pay rises. Independent ofgem is run by former directors and current investors in energy companies - our upcoming price cap reduction is nowhere near reflecting how energy prices have dropped and will be ofset with ever increasing standing charges.

How will this pan out? Which "old school/club friends" with vested interests will run it under the usual British appearance of "independence"?

BBC News - Football Governance Bill: Legislation for independent football regulator being introduced

In all honesty I'm just curious rather than bothered. Football is long dead to me. Even if we reverted to pre-premier league models, all records and history have been ruined by the stagnation/stratification of the last 20 years.

How on earth can they guarantee independence? Staff it with rugby fans? Peopke who ate just ambivalent about the game? A bunch of public school uni drop outs who have no other chance of a well paid job? What qualifications will they look for?

At the end of the day everybody is corruptible.

I am sure that the clubs in power (cos that is what it is right now), will do what they can to lobby and ensure that they are the ones that are represented on any 'independent' board.

Just read about it and my first thought was 'Independent, yeah right'.

They're independent and foreign until they get invited to Dubai for a party sesh and return home to brand new mansions and supercars.

That's the trouble. Get the most avid everton fan, promise him a couple of million and you'd see Liverpool's scripted title unroll "independently."

The problem is money and humans ... they just don't mix well with sporting competition.

I'll not be holding my breath waiting for large scale tangible results then
