I love the constant insistence that people in the past just intrinsically knew how to manage and cope with extreme situations, as though there weren't public safety campaigns telling people how to cross a road safely, not climb up electricity pylons, how to use prams properly, not lick plug sockets, how to avoid getting rabies, how to spot homosexuals.
