What else they gonna do?
No idea

Could they not make a rule that if a player is unable to fulfil the fixture then the eliminated opponent gets to take that persons place instead?

I know these things are rare instances but if Djokovic or Norrie lost in the final would they not have a valid argument that Kyrgios had an unfair advantage especially when these tournaments are played in such a short space of time and you have very little time to rest inbetween matches in a very physically demanding sport.

Kyrgios must be the first player ever to play a Grand Slam final having never played a Grand Slam semi final
First time its happened in the open era...
its a shame, but two things, Nadal still beat Fritz when injured, and ~I admire the fight shown to dig in through pain to try to win. Also that hes listened to his body and the docs and called it. cos it cant be an easy decision.

On the injury front it needs saying, it's been good to see Venus Williams at Wimbledon this year, mixed doubles with Murray jnr. What is amazing about her besides the multiple grandslams and the will to win from the journey she and her sister have succeeded through is that she (Venus) has and has always had (although preliminary earlier) Crohns disease. This is a serious and debilitating auto immune disease, and this lady was competing at elite level sport (physical hard work elite sport!) and in some cases winning titles. I can't think of another example of this. Extraordinary!
