Roberto Martinez has praised
Sylvain Distin’s professionalism during the second half of the season.
The 37-year-old Frenchman has found first team opportunities limited since the turn of the year, with
John Stones and
Phil Jagielka forging a solid partnership in the centre of the back four.
Distin is out of contract in the summer after almost six years at Goodison Park.
Martinez said at his press conference after the Sunderland game: “Sylvain has been a phenomenal professional and servant of Everton.
“It has been a tough season (for Sylvain) but in football it happens. You get a young man like
John Stones at the age of 20 who has performed in an incredible manner and has developed a very strong partnership with
Phil Jagielka.
“In January, Sylvain wanted to leave and go into another club but that never materialised. From that point on we needed to look forward to the future and wish Sylvain the best of luck.”
