Summer transfer window.

Why ? I don’t think we need the money when we will be selling 4 or 5 fringe players. I like Grealish but I think Ndiaye is much better off the left
I think we might have the pull to keep some players and attract others. We're a club on the up with some excellent teammates. Ok we won't attract or be able to afford the elite players but I think we're an attractive proposition

lol he's not getting held hostage

Mate he's here next season
At the moment we hold the cards when it comes to his contract, but we need to show him his value to us, which means a new contract offer matching our highest earners.

The problem that arises with a new contract is a release clause will be added.

He's happy and i don't doubt he will sign the contract.
But it's then down to us to match his expectations on the field, or a club can just offer the price of his release clause..

So to keep him happy, we have to hand the power over to him. If that makes sense.

Just DM him, like you did with Jack, and he wont go anywhere..

We need to play him around plyers of his ability level and not around the likes of Mykolenko, play him on the left, get a decent fullback behind him, and get a decent striker to work with/aim at.

And what happens when he understandably says I'm a Champions League level player, I've only got a few years left at my peak, that's the level I want to play at? Holding players hostage doesn't end well. It's not like he's a boyhood blue or something.
He had his move to a ‘big club’ and for him it worked out terribly

Maybe he might think grass isn’t greener and besides the club is in a hugely different position than it was 12-18 months ago…

Agree with all of this! Thing is his expectations on the field could quite understandably be playing champions league football and challenging for titles. Those are expectations we cannot match in the next couple years regardless of how much better a position the club is in or how much we promise to invest in the summer etc etc. So then what happens when Arsenal, Chelsea and Utd are all bidding big fees for him in the summer?

Contracts theses days mean nothing ....

No they don't really, and that's what the post explains (if you read it)

All a new contract gives you is a price point.

It gives a player the right to leave if that price is activated.

But a new contract with a wage that matches the best earners in the club, shows a player his worth to you.

The best thing they can do is take the new contract..

If you show good progress on the project you sold to the player, than that release clause might never be taken.

A good new deal shows a lot, but you hand over the power.

We should make a cheeky approach for Andy Robertson. The lad probably has two or three decent seasons left in him.

The big pull factor is playing for a team on the champions league plus wages something we have never had sadly...

God you are hard work..

We have the power because he still has plenty of time on the contract, so we can say no, and Illy isn't the kind of lad that will sit out like Isak.

If he signs the contract his wages will go over £100.000 and he will than have the power.

If a bigger club than comes in for him they have to match the release clause, so we would get a very good fee and Illy could than make his decision.

He can't lose by signing a contract..
