Steve Round being groomed for the Managers Job?

I remember Chris Hughton at newcastle he did ok.

Yeah he did ok , hardly earth shattering but ok certainly . However not to be pedantic but I'm pretty sure he wasn't the assistant But the coach appointed by the director of football probably to be in place if and when keegan got the bullet. I think cox , round and McDermott at various stages were all above him at various stages. It's not always the case but most managers are usually terrified to have anyone too 'talented' as a Number Two as they're a ready made replacement ,mthats why i'll be interested to see if Carragher gets a job an anfield.

Mid 70's wasnt it ? Your Going back a fair way there mate whilst really helps make my argument

nearly every manager has done well and some clubs but will have a disaster or two in the cv. right now I think we are a club who have got most things right, we need a spark maybe but managers with 'media personality ' are talked up and to be honest I would hate playing for nearly all of them

Here we go lads. He's a great tactician with plenty of determination.

I guess because these days more managers are sacked than anything else we don't see many appointments from within as replacements.

Managers and assistants very often go hand in hand. If one is sacked the assistant usually leaves soon afterwards.

And a new manager would usually bring his own staff in. Not always, but happens often.

Most managers are assistants at some point before getting an opportunity
I have no idea what he'd be like, although I also can't think of many realistic names who fill me with confidence either
If he got the job I'd get behind him but part of me would resent the board for taking the cheap option

maybe he could be an interim manager while he shows andy townsend the ropes

I think the only thing a fella of Andy's calibre needs showing is where the keys to the trophy cabinet are kept lid!(y)

Aye think you could be correct. As for carragher he'll be on a hiding to nothing as well, best off cutting his teeth elsewhere first.

The fact Round walked on Southgate at 'boro indicates he might not be quite the 'yes man' people think. However, we really don't know much about his coaching abilities. He's had a massive amount of coaching experience for his age, but you obviously need a little more to be a manager.

Who is the last assistant at a club appointed when a manager has moved on ? There are probably loads but I can't think of a long successful list to be honest

I guess David O'Leary at Leeds? For a little while at least. Walter Smith came after Souness at Rangers, but inherited a dominant team. Hmm, obviously the Liverpool boot room had some success until Roy Evans.

What's your opinion based on?

Well, i've read some things about his arguement and 'walking from Southgate' which I didn't agree with. 'A diffenence in philosophy' is quoted which sounds a little wishy washy to me.

I find him in interviews to be a little up Moyes' arse, which is understandable of course. As you say, he is told what to say you'd imagine.

He didn't exactly blow Newcastle away with brilliant work as far as I can see.

He wears the headset.

And my final point is based on nothing, but I can't help but think him and Moyes are victims of each other, both negative and positive.

But I repeat, we don't have much to go on.

the reason not many assistants spring to mind is because lots of successful teams don't change their staff that often including their manager, and 95% per cent of most managers (a blind guess) are appointed because of a few months success at another club and nearly all fail. Wenger started as a coach, Guardiola promoted from coach, if you are looking at success beyond that then you are looking at clubs doing well at a lower level with little cash and assistants regularly get promoted and do well

I think that this is a great point. The vast majority of managers are sacked due to what is deemed poor performance, if Moyes does indeed leave, it will be based on his desire to leave not his performance as a manager. Usually the backroom team exits along with the outgoing manager as the new man wants to bring his own team. But the scenario we are discussing is very different, Round has really if anything been a contributing factor in several years of moderate success at the club, if anything his resume' has improved since joining the club.

Fair enough.

he really doesn't look too exciting as a personality but I would rather see any excitement limited to what happens on the pitch
