As @the esk and @Eggs have already quoted , his level head amongst the clamour of fans led to the 80's success most of us on here remember so well. Howard Kendall , in his book, remarks on the vote of confidence given by Sir Philip. And how he really meant it . A giant in Evertons history . RIP

Met him after the first ever "Hall of Fame" 'do' at The Adelphi. We were very, very hammered on the way out and he handled my mate's arm round him, imploring him to "come The Paradox with us, Phil, lad" with dignified aplomb. As we staggered out, he said "have a splendid evening, gentlemen". Topped off a tremendous night.
