Sir Landon Of Donovan

I think this Garber chap is missing the point.

The EPL is the pinnacle of the sport, hands down. Having a National of your country playing at the highest level in any sport helps grown the local version. This is clearly the case in Oz, where the A-League is growing rapidly due, in no small part, to the successes of Messers Kewell, Cahill, Neill, Viduka, etc, etc, and the last two appearances in the World Cup obviously.

We all like to see "local boy/girl done good" on the world stage. IMHO, Landon Donovan will do more good for the MLS from within the EPL, rather than within the MLS.

I know I keep throwing my 2 cents at his facebook page and twitter page. :)

How MLS got him after his confed cup performance for 2.05M WITHOUT an escape clause is beyond me. That agent should have been fired yesterday.

It's likely that the only way he's allowed to go on loan last season is if he signs that extension, if I understand correctly.

Personally, it wouldn't be fiscally responsible to let Landon go in the summer transfer window, I imagine they hope to ride his popularity out through the end of the MLS season, but after that, I think things get a bit more open. Garber had to say this today, what is he supposed to say?

But when the winter window hits, I don't think the league can afford to take a stance like this. The league's current state is that of a development league (the vast majority of the U.S. team started in the MLS before going on to bigger and better things). If they keep the best player they ever developed from leaving, that hurts their reputation in the long run. That, and it would [Poor language removed] a lot of U.S. Soccer (and thus MLS fans) who would much rather see LD playing against better competition.

There are two scenarios for Landon:

1) He stays in the MLS and comes over on a loan deal (like last year)

2) Manchester City spends big money to get him

he will not sign with us - the MLS only benefits if he goes to a "big" and "well known" team like City. (I mean "big" in the States... USA loves marquee players, which city has). It sucks, but that's all folks.

This :(

Think he'll come to us though.. But do we want to wait that long for another good rw?

If you in the States think Man City are "big" - there's something seriously wrong there.

That club hasn't won a trophy in almost 40 years.

The council gave them their stadium.

They aren't even a founder league member. Old or New.

Plus they have enough foreign players now anyway, the 25 squad cap with 8 "homegrown" rules are in this year. They're on the edge of that as it is.

You obviously didn't think of that.

In all. City are just [Poor language removed].

Players like Caicedo, Garrido and Jo are all likely to leave. A few others aswell.

Not that I think they'd go for Donovan, but they could balance things out and sell there dead wood foreign players.

HARRISON, N.J. -- Major League Soccer plans to keep Landon Donovan.

MLS commissioner Don Garber said the league has no intention of accepting transfer offers for the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder.

"He's become a real soccer hero," Garber said Thursday after the news conference to announce French star Thierry Henry's signing with the New York Red Bulls. "MLS needs soccer heroes, and we have a great American soccer hero playing for us in LA, holding the torch for the sport in our country, and that's very important. I don't believe that it's something we can do without."

” -- MLS commissioner Don Garber on Landon Donovan

Donovan was the best U.S. player at the World Cup, scoring three goals to become the American career leader with five. He agreed in December to a four-year contract with MLS that pays him a base salary this year of $2.05 million.

While Donovan struggled during previous stints with Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich, he played strongly and attracted renewed attention in Europe when MLS loaned him to Everton for 10 weeks in January. Donovan scored two goals in 13 matches, helping the Toffees beat Chelsea and Manchester United, and draw against Arsenal.

Everton captain Phil Neville told Everton TV last week during the club's preseason tour of Australia that "I've spoken to Landon and I know for a fact that he wants to come back here."

When he returned to the Galaxy from the World Cup on July 2, Donovan left an opening.

"Right now, I want to be in America," he said. "If there's something serious to look at, then I will. I never say never to anything. But for now, I'm very excited to be home."

Garber said additional offseason loans are possible but isn't interested in a permanent transfer.

"Landon is in my view the greatest player of our generation and an incredibly valuable part of our history but also of our future," Garber said. "He proved in England last year on loan and he proved in South Africa that he's a world-class player and he's also proved that he loves our league and really has accepted the mantle of really being one of the leaders of the sport. It is my hope and my expectation that we have him for the rest of his career because I think the contributions that he makes are invaluable to our future success."

Donovan's agent, Richard Motzkin, declined to respond to Garber's remarks.

Was about to say the same about city, been in the States two and a half years and while I have seen tons of 'sky 4' fans, I've seen no man city fans, I saw one city jersey at the US v Czech rep just before the WC but I saw two pompey jerseys at that!
Behind the 'sky 4' its Everton, Villa, Spurs and Fulham. The signing of Donovan would definitely make Everton one of the most popular clubs here.

Jimmy Johnston. George Best. Jairzinho. Trevor Steven. (Callaghan. Ugh). Players I can get excited about. Please. Two things: Moyes doesn't much like out and out wingers. And Landon just aint that great. I think LCAB will confirm.

Sure, he's no Garrincha but he is a very good winger, Moyes may not love out and out wingers (Donovan is pretty good behind the striker aswell and can play in the centre) but he does love his grafters and his American players.
Yes, Donovans price will have gone up after the WC but so has his exposure, If Everton had any money, this would be a wise move from a footballing and marketing point of view, but unfortunately, the club has no money so it will be another winter loan spell!
