We should sign this guy, he sounds as if he would be a good signing!
Last week I got a chance to talk to the U.S. national team's all-time leading scorer and recent Everton loan star Landon Donovan on the phone. We covered a variety of topics, yet he only found a few of my questions mildly annoying. So, without further needless jabber, here's the latest entry in our unintentional series of
U.S. national team interviews featuring chain-restaurant based questioning.
Me: I’ve got some questions for you – some are from readers, some are from me, so here we go.
Landon: OK, cool.
Me: First of all, how
rum and stoked are you to be talking to me right now?
Landon: To be what?
Me: Rum and stoked. It’s a little catch phrase we have at Dirty Tackle.
Landon: [laughs] Um, it’s nice to be here. I’m excited.
Me: Anyway, congrats on your success at Everton. Is it nice to have some sunlight back in your life now that you’re back in LA?
Landon: Yeah, this is clearly where I’m comfortable and where I’m used to being so it’s nice to be home a little bit, it’s nice to see my teammates and it’s nice to keep myself going leading up to the World Cup.
Me: As someone who supported your move to Everton
from the start, I saw a lot of doubters – a lot of supporters, too, but was silencing those negative voices a motivating factor or do you just shut them out?
Landon: You know, at this point in my career you kinda learn to just deal with it and, you know, nobody has any idea what my life is like or what my career is like so there’s no reason to worry about that. For me personally, it was a really important step in my career and I’m really glad that I went and took advantage of this experience.
Me: I know you’ve said you’d like to go back at some point. Would you be looking to make another loan move next year or would you rather go back permanently at some point down the road?
Landon: Well honestly I don’t really think about that. I’m kinda done living in what might happen in the future and what comes will come. If any opportunity anywhere arises then I’ll take it seriously, but I’m happy with where I’m at right now and I can worry about the rest later.
Me: On a scale of 1-10 how scary is David Moyes when he’s angry?
Landon: [laughs] I was actually really impressed with David Moyes and everything that he did. Not only the day-to-day coaching, but the day-to-day management of that club and he is absolutely the man who runs that club. And he’s just very honest and very professional. He lets you know exactly what he expects of you and there’s no room for interpretation – he’s very clear. You either do the job or you don’t.
Me: While you were there, did you ever go to
Nando’s?
Landon: I didn’t, but actually when we were in South Africa [for the Confederations Cup last summer], we went to Nando’s, which was quite the experience.
Me: They have them in South Africa, too?
Landon: Yeah, they have them in South Africa. That was actually the first time I’d ever heard of it and when I went to England I didn’t realize that it was actually an English chain.
Me: Yeah, it’s funny, the only two in America are in Washington D.C. and they’re, like, four blocks apart.
Landon: Oh, actually I had no idea they had them in America. That’s interesting. I try to steer clear as much as possible [laughs].
Me: Well, after the World Cup, it’ll be a treat.
Landon: Yeah, exactly.
Me: Which Everton player would you like to bring back to the Galaxy and what would you lure him with?
Landon: [laughs] That’s a good question. Um, one guy I probably got along with more than anyone was – well, may two guys – were Tim Cahill and Phil Neville. I mean, if I had to pick a player I’d take any of ‘em – they’re all really talented, good players, but I think a guy like Tim Cahill would play well here and I think he would be very good for this team. And what would I lure him with?
Me: Yeah.
Landon: [laughs] I would lure him with…a kangaroo and a koala bear.
Me: Good choice (afterthought: I guess “shrimp on the barbie” would’ve been too cliche). Speaking of MLS, after playing against teams like Man United and Chelsea, is it hard to get motivated for a game against, say,
FC Dallas?
Landon: Well, there’s – motivation is inside each person. So a lot of people think that because you play Man U or because you play in a World Cup or whatever that’s where you get your motivation. If that’s what you’re waiting for to get your motivation, then you’re not gonna make it as an athlete. My motivation comes from inside, to perform the way that I know that I can perform, whether I’m playing a scrimmage against UCLA, against Houston, in LA, or Man United, or England in the World Cup. For me it’s all the same, so that’s, uh, that’s a non-issue.
