Struggle to understand the need for the term proactive, especially when mentioned or told that you should be more proactive.

Why not just merely save you should be more active? Pro-active surely means to be active in your method of being active?

reckon it's kind of like 'act now before the particular situation requires more 'activity' to effect the outcome, retro-active being the opposite... basically don't procrastinate!

But if you're acting now (proactive) then surely wouldn't active alone suffice? As you are either being active or not. Think it's simply unnecessary.
