Saves of All Time

It was a very good and crucial save, and I'm sure he is buzzing given when it happened and against who

However its close enough to him that its slightly in the "should get a hand to it" territory for me

It is impressive getting such a strong hand to it

Not close to an all time best for me tho

Only watched it 3 or 4 times without really focusing in on it that much

Agree with this, of course it's still a world class save due to the pace it is hit with, but it is close enough for someone with Pickford's reactions to get a hand to it. And if you can do that as a keeper, then it is disappointing if you don't keep it out of the net.

His save for England v Colombia was better.

It needs to be watched at full speed. Non of this slow mo stuff as at full speed you appreciate it more. It was travelling at some speed.

Yes it was fairly close to him but I've seen many similar shots fly past the keeper due to how much power was on the shot.

Yeah I don't disagree, I still think it's one he should get a hand to but getting such a strong hand to it is all great technique

I will admit I've not seen it full speed more than maybe twice

I love Jordan Pickford. Best player we’ve had this century.

Here is another super goalie we’ve had.

Incredible montage, great save after great save after great save. Although 3 mins I'm starting to think "how crap is our defending?" 🤣

Maybe thats why the 90s and 00s had some relegation scares, we got too used to go "nah, no point in defending, Big Nev will just save it"

More difficult to make saves from distance now with the aerodynamics of the football. It’s lighter, being hit harder and more likely to move in the air. The movement applies less to yesterday as it was a thunder strike, but for me the double save vs Chelsea at home was as good as I have seen (including Nev)

Dont you get bored trying to wind fellow Blues up, it was funny years ago, by the way
In fairness to Chico, he's a master at it, THE master perhaps. He doesnt discriminate, he winds up blues or non-blues.

If you get chico'd, it's on you.

*Just dont take anything chico says seriously.

Godlike.

The best. Ever.

Reflexes sharper than razor blades, but it was his presence in the box that made him the best. Look at some of the all-time greats he foiled in that video - Rush, Lineker, etc. One-on-one, there was never anybody better. Ian Rush holds the record for goals in derbies. That record would be utterly uncatchable were in not for Neville Southall. He'd have scored triple the goals.
I always thought Southall often went to ground too early in one on ones, was the one thing I thought he could improve on.

He's my all time favourite though.
Pickford is completely coming close but you can never beat my childhood hero!

I remember running into him one day during his playing career, stopped him for a photo.
My dad, who was always terrible with any camera, took the photo and chopped half my head off. I am a bit taller then Big Nev.
Must have been 30 years later we ran into him again, opening a shop in town or something.
My dad took another photo... this chopping my head off again!!

Southall has always had that one for me…..but that Pickford one takes it…..

No, it doesn’t.

Not much between those two save mind you and I would not argue with anyone saying Pickford’s was better even though I think the Southall one was better being as Falco was much closer to goal and Nev had less time to see it.

But that is splitting hairs.

The reason Neville’s save is our all time goalkeeping moment (at least in my long lifetime of watching EFC) is the context.

Context is everything here.

That save won us the game, it broke Spurs as title challengers (they were our closest pursuers going into the match) and gave us the impetus and belief to get over the line 👍

Was watching that with my eldest the other day as she's started playing as a GK.

The double save from Scholes in the '95 FA Cup (2.15 ish) doesnt get enough credit. Vital time of the game and meant we weathered a bit of pressure from Man Utd.
He should have bowed out that day, would have been a beautiful ending to a truly magnificent career,I still recall sadly his last ever appearance v Spurs at Goodison a 2-0 reversal,a few catcalls and derisory comments towards him that day unbecoming of what he had achieved for us over so many years.👍
