Sandhills station

Lack of a ferry terminal would be a problem there.
Sure, it'll be grand, we'll just jump off. I still got a swim up the Suir to Tipperary. As @Taifi gorm notes, we could do with the wash anyways.

I mean, are there not facilities for ferries just to shuttle people back and forth into town (and elsewhere?)
It would need state funding but considering the foot traffic been taken away from other areas, it may end up cheaper in the end.

At the moment, I take the train to Kirkdale from Central.

There is about a mile walk to Goodison from there.

How much further would it be walking to BMD from Lime Street?

That sounds like it was the attitude of the council when planning for transport links for the stadium, "how are we going to get 53,000 to and from this new stadium out by the docks? Sure there`s a station out in Sandhills, till be grand, meeting adjourned."

The problem with Sandhills is not so much where it is, its more that you have to queue to get into the station because the platform can`t cater for the amount of people that will probably look to use it, and at times there`s not enough service to get folks away in good time. The other night was a test event and there were plenty of complaints about how it worked, so it they can`t cope with the expected passenger numbers from a 10k event heaven help us when a full house turn up, including 4,000 or so away fans who think a train to the ground is the easy way to get to it.

From the BBC article. Weird to talk about turning queuing for the train into a fanzine experience with a stage, food trucks and big screens. Surely better to just run the trains more often?

It works at the grand national, after a fashion, because there are multiple trains and everyone going is in the main enjoying the racing together. Football rivalry doesn’t come into it, and you can have a bit of a laugh with people in the queue as you shuffle towards the multiple trains.

Aside from not having enough trains, It won’t work at Sandhills as you may have the away fans mixing with us, which is a recipe for disaster.

Are they going to coral and escort every away contingent to and from the ground, for every game, so there is no mixing of supporters?

Considering the build has been going for years, it’s a pathetic solution that the very highly paid kopite in chief has come up with, and his parking restrictions are a mess. If he had anything about him he would resign immediately and let someone with half a braincell to sort it out.

How big do you think the ferry needs to be? A Mersey ferry holds bout 600 people, by the time that gets to town and back you would be quicker walking (if you’re able) or the bus, even then we’re just moving the crowd of people from Bramley to town.

I think if they get a load and I mean a load of buses and a few extra trains on the stations, they will be in a better plave, but they can’t just magically up a few extra trains.

We just have to accept Sandhills is limited in what it can do. It can't deal with thousands of people at once. It's not like Stratford station for West Ham which is the 5th most used station in Britain now with multiple different tube lines and national rail - all with high train frequency and capacity. Sandhills is a tiny little backwater in the middle of nowhere only serving Merseyrail. A bit like Falmer by Brighton's stadium.

So we've got to look at numerous different alternatives to Sandhills to lessen the pressure. Train wise - walk to Kirkdale/Bank Hall (north ways). Walk back into town to Moorfields/James Street. But the elephant in the room is the occasions when Merseyrail is knackered then it's going to be chaos. Broken down trains are frequent, weather issues affect the service, signalling problems etc.

A lot of fans are going to just walk back into town, stay in the ground after the game, stay in pubs around the dock road. This is less of an issue on a typical Saturday afternoon, but on a cold/wet Wednesday night in February then that's a problem because none of these things are appealing.

That leaves buses. There needs to be loads of double decker buses within a 5-10 minute walk heading to town/Bootle.

When you consider the commercial benefits to the city already and the local economy when it’s opened, the council should have implemented a clear plan with regard to the transport infrastructure. It is dereliction of duty that they have thus far failed to do anything with the rail links.

When the stadium was in planning Rotheram had diverted all the transport money to a second station in his native Kirkby.

The next station due to be built is one at Baltic by the Box Park. He's also looking into the possibility of a station by Utting Ave to benefit his football club.

from Kirkdale to BMD its 1.8m and kirkdale to Goodison its 0.8m

If you are already in town, its not worth going to Kirkdale and then walking to BMD though because going from the town centre to kirkdale you go so far past BMD Its basically the same distance to BMD, from Kirkdale station or Lime street 1.8 miles, just coming from different directions

But that's not for everyone and certainly not for many who drive from outside areas. Or who are disabled etc. Which brings you back to the disgraceful parking situation. I believe is a money making scheme for the council. People will need to park somewhere.
Exactly the point. As an OAP who lives 20 miles away in a town with no rail station, I have no practical option but to drive.

The massive no parking zone is a hammer blow, meaning a 40 minute walk for me. God help me if I ever get a zimmer.

bmdmap.webp

purple arrow points at Lime street station.
cross by the river is BMD and the radius is 1.64miles
the other cross is Goodison and is 2.21 miles.

This map and circles drawn are very very rough, and the distances are direct (as the crow flies) so not realised methods of travel.
Goodison and BMD is ~ 1.69miles apart. Again in straight line.
