Injuries, tiredness from 1/4 Finals etc will all play a part but at the moment “ on paper “ you’d go for France v England and Ireland v Wales semi finals, and a France v Ireland final . But there’s a lot still to play for.

No, no. There's a quarter final up for us next - and we all know what that means.

It's bizarre really. The results of this year and the last number of years confirm that Ireland are unquestionably one of the top four sides in the world. But there's a very good chance we will fall at the last eight - where the tournament really starts - despite playing superbly. It's quite plausible we lose to New Zealand by a point in a classic - and still be labelled chokers.

I remain pessimistic because to be optimistic one has to expect history to be made. That's a high bar to set. But they're definitely capable of making it.
