I would take a bet that we will not be top 6 (which is at least continuence), it doesn't matter if he doesn't tear the team apart, the bottom line is (as rogers has shown at liverpool at the moment) is that the style of football they play does not work... especially in the BPL, his only positive (the FA cup) came courtesy of a city team that didn't want to play for mancini any more....
We needed a winner to take us into europe but now we will slide back into mediocraty and are paying for the privilage of doing it.

Lends that crystal ball after you mate

Gutted at this. A choice between someone who has won a fairly major European league twice with a club that produced Mourinho and AVB, and who would cost nothing vs someone who spawned an FA Cup win thanks to Neville being utter ****e and got his team releagated and who would cost millions in compo, and Kenwright picks the second one. That bloke is a ****ing mentalist.

You took the words right out of my mouth there, as always I'll back the team and manager to the death but in my view this appointment shows a lack of ambition by the club, just not good enough.

All Porto had to do to win the league every season is get 4 points or more off Benfica. Lets not pretend like he's done what Klopp did.

Yes, but that means he knows how to win big games. Did you watch Wigan vs Swansea last month?

IF he doesn't miraculously make our defence turn to mush and he buys sensibly (and players of a better ilk than what he had at Wigan) then there's no reason he can't be a success for us. Wish him the best of luck and hope he does well

Underwhelmed really. For all the talk of exciting attacking football, Wigan were a team that scored fewer than Southampton last season, and only 4 more than a fairly diabolical Reading team. Despite having the 'fab four' of McCarthy, Kone, McManaman and Maloney available to him all season.

I'll support him but i've never understood this guys hype one bit.

Me neither. Blackpool were all out attack, so you can understand why they let in so many goals but Wigan aren't like that. Al Habsi was making blinding saves every week until he was replaced with Joel too. But then they've shown that they can turn it on when they really need to and beat City at Wembley and Arsenal at the Emirates, so he can't say that he doesn't have the players. It seems to me that he struggles to motivate his side and that their general level of concentration is poor.

I will support the team, but if we struggle and are in the bottom 3 by christmas, I'll be calling for his head.

That's very harsh, but it's the way I feel.

He's got previous of being at relegation level in the Premiership.

To take the club from top 6 to bottom 3 would be enough for me to consider it reasonable for him to be sacked.

He's got to be held to a higher standard now

I think he rejected Villa because he wasn't impressed with what was on offer and turned Liverpool down because he wanted complete control.

I also reckon that's why Pereira might have missed out, his actions at Porto suggest he's more of a coach than a 'manager', and we need somebody to come in and do every part of Moyes' job.

What he said.

Warning Positive Thread

OK we can be disappointed with Martinez being appointed, maybe we feel we deserved a more "exotic" manager rather than a bloke that just got Wigan relegated.

I was at first hoping Martinez didn't get the job but thinking about it I feel it will be a good appointment, he has got several of the qualities we liked about Moyes and doesn't have some of the ones we hated about Moyes.

Like Moyes:

1. Longevity - Martinez isn't going to disappear after 6 months, he wants to be at a club to build a team and improve on it.
2. Transfer Bargains - Martinez taps into different leagues and picks up some good, cheap talent.
3. Infrastructure - Martinez involves himself at all levels through the club.

Unlike Moyes:

1. Bottle - Martinez will setup to attack and if the team is capable he will not sit on a 1-0 at home to Norwich.
2. Negative Tactics - We all wished Moyes would attack more, Martinez is definitely more offensive.
3. Hooooof - Martinez will be more likely to play on the ground instead of 80 yard hit and hopes.

I feel he could be a good acquisition for the club and can take us a step beyond where Moyes couldn't, when out squad is fit we are a match for anyone. With a few shrewd attacking purchases there is no reason we can't get top 4 this coming season.

Instead of being disappointed lets get behind him and see what he can do!

So you would have sacked Moyes after his second full season then mate ?

He took us from 7th to 17th while actually being given transfer money.
