Everton failed in a last-ditch bid to sign Argentine World Cup star Juan Roman Riquelme.

David Moyes was ready to land him for £5million from Villarreal and even organised a work permit, but the player opted to stay in Spain and join Atletico Madrid.

Just the fact that he considered, however briefly to come here shows how much the standard of Everton have risen over the last few years.
