I wonder why, when we signed him on a permenent deal after his loan, we only gave him a three-year deal? He was 26 at the time, coming into his prime. Poor planning, really. Effectively, after we re-sign him, we'll have paid Spurs about £1m to let him sit on their bench for a year.

Without being a party to the discussions on his contract, it's impossible to tell. If he'd turned out to be another Alex Nyarko we'd have looked daft giving him a longer deal. Remember, there have been cases of players doing well while on loan but easing up a bit when signed on a permanent deal.

Playing hardball with levy and spurs is a recipe for disaster in my opinion . The club let Bentley in particular and others effectively rot in the reserves rather than be 'turned over' and saw off Chelsea over Modric last year . It'd be a dangerous game and if your pienaar or his people you'd need to look at having a 'cut off point '

Totally agree with sheedy, we play great football with him, in fact without him we're toothless, just pay 5-6mil and be done with it.

I'm not necessarily saying we should pay top dollar mate It's more an observation on playing hardball with spurs. I suspect the entire hold up is down to how much money we have to spend

To be honest I think we should pay a good wedge if it comes down to it, obviously you don't walk into a meeting to broker a deal by showing all your cards, but from a fan's point of view I'm not arsed if we spend what they want for him. He makes us tick, the creative spark we lacked.

And yeah, we could be waiting for someone to be sold before we are even able to pay for him.

As LCAB has always said, it's outs before ins i suspect it hinges on someone going out, i am 100% convinced it won't be Baines. I HOPE it's someone like Anichebe. A saleable asset, someone on a big contract whom he has persisted to play and get him on 'show' to potential buyers.

I think, assuming we sign Pienaar, that this will be our team next season:
Howard
Hibbert Heitinga Jagielka Baines
Naismith Rodwell Gibson Pienaar
Fellaini
Jelavic

I like that! Strong in all areas, if we get off to a good start, no reason why this team cant finish higher than last season.
