Well you're being a pedant.

My point was less about Maicon, and more about Neville and Bale. Bale is very good, so you can't be that bad if you keep him quiet.

My point is neville at his best vs bale at his best would equal a skinned neville. Bale at his best vs maicon + lucio at there best would equal a quiet Bale. He's a crackin player inter just took their foot of the pedal coz they we're 4-0 up with 5 mins to go nand their shape was gone

come on lads.

time for a bit of realism

he is average at best, possibly poor.

He is getting on and offers us nothing in terms of ability but plenty in terms of 'other attributes'.

As moyes admit himself 'he might not be the best player' , no david he is not, he is one of our worst.

Im sorry, I have ago at the kopites (and rightly so) that Kuyt gets in their team for his work rate over ability. Phil Neville gets in our team for leadership over ability.

And do I need to mention the rubbish he comes out with in the press?

I don't care if he's the sh*test player ever to walk out at Goodison, if him playing means us winning then i want him in the team!

The only important piece of your post im afraid dion.

Oovavu indeed Mr. Hibbert....

Bale wasn't at his best on saturday -- because we didn't let him be! He was neutralised.

It seems fair to praise Pip's leadership due to our return to form since his return to the lineup/captaincy. Honestly, I buy it and I think while it likely isn't solely causing our return, I think it is influential. That line of reasoning takes me down a less rosy path though:

What does that say about Arteta as a captain? Personally I was never sold on him as our leader. Cahill, Jags, or Baines seemed like more obvious choices to me, but whatever. I trust Moyes, and will continue to... but our games without Pip, Arteta showed me very little as a leader.

we just look more organised when he's on the pitch. that is a very important quality to have. good captain.

I'm sorry but Neville is our best RB at the club at the moment. Certainly the most complete RB we have as he's solid defensively and he can join in the attack. He's first choice without a doubt for me and his fantastic leadership skills also bring an important attribute to the team.

Totally agree, we are a much poorer side without him and he is really helping Seamus to settle in, a great professional.

When he plays, our win ratio is better than when he doesn't. That answers it for me, it's a team game, best team, not best individuals.

Crap player, average captain. Talismatic.

Has cost us nearly £30m at last guess...

You can see how effectively he uses his experience. Standin your ground when Crouch jumps upon you and falls over is experience. Ref can't give a foul for that. Double team with Jags and making Crouch a sandwich = experience.

A little nudge which is hardly noticable to Crouch and then Crouch falls over jags = experience. No ref can give that a nailed on foul. That's just experience and that's awesome! (y)

Best bit of the game bar the freekick for me.

I think Jags would be a great captain too. Pip might not be the most gifted but he wears his heart on his sleeve and the other players seem to respond to him. He also is one of the only players who doesn't go missing wen we're having a bad run his morale never drops.

Pip has something about him,he isn't the best player at the club but he can galvanize the team and they respond to him so well.Could have a decent career in the game after his playing days are over if he wants the hassle.
