I heard someone call someone a weapon yesterday as a positive term (not in the same context as Neville used). When did calling someone a weapon become a good thing?

Its common in the US to refer to players as weapons in a positive way, often in American football. For example, "Joe's ability to catch the ball out of the backfield makes him a real weapon in the passing game".
