Any combination of CBs under Martinez were more accomplished on the ball than after he was sacked. I remember when even Stones and Alcarez played together and looked like a good pairing for a brief period. It's as much about having the confidence of getting on the ball as much as having the technical capability to play that way. If a coach tells you not to arse around in the first third of the pitch then you get very conservative football generally speaking.
I'll tell you we he and that other muppet Baines will be hoping for in the summer: that the club employ another manager who'll bend to the will of *common sense* at Finch Farm that you have to have "Jags" and "Bainsey" on side if you want to fit in and cause no unnecessary ructions with the rest of the squad.
