Persistence of Martinez - Time to change.

“The second half we started with a good mentality and we had Southampton where we wanted them. All they wanted to do was work on the counter-attack."

I think he meant they had us where they wanted us and where able to pick us off on the counter. We look shoddy enough when teams play this way in the first half but when we're a goal down or in the 2nd half we look absolutely abysmal.
I ca
He won't be able to if it all goes tits up against Stoke.[/QUOT
Im reading about people loing faith in him, calling him all sorts.

Some people are sounding like the United fans last season after not winning the league for a season.

Its pathetic.
Its more pathetic following him blindly thinking he is doing no wrong.
We are in a mess on the pitch and his refusal to change things is startling.
He rightly got praise last season but this season everybody can see whats wrong and yet he refuses to fix it.
His mis management this season is shockingly bad and fans are rightly worried and its pathetic when posters on here start name calling when they don't like an opinion

I personally think someone was spot on the other day when they mentioned that Martinez has struggled to cope due to the amount of injuries we have had. When we have a fully fit 11 we seem to be able to cope. He applies his tactics which suit the team because they are all very good players and are all playing in their correct positions. Aside from injuries, as most have pointed out, there are three players from last season who were as good as they've been during their careers who are now starting to show their age and are making too many mistakes too often. Howard, Distin and Barry.

It looks as though their deterioration has took him by surprise and he's been unable to accept that it's happened to them and persisted with them thinking they're just going to come good again. It's not going to happen. Howard needs realistic competition from a decent keeper who can come in and remove him from the team when not playing well. We don't have that at the moment as Robles has been poor every time he has come in. Distin needs dropping immediately and should only be played in extreme circumstances. I still think Barry is capable of doing a job in the busy periods, especially coming off the bench. Osman is similar, but there is no way that Barry or Osman should be anywhere near the first 11 if Besic, Barkley, McCarthy or Gibson are fit.

At the moment Besic and Barkley have to be the starters in central midfield.

I also think Baines needs to feel under pressure as he's been awful recently when at the start of the season he was one of the best fullbacks in the league. Like with England at the World Cup, I think he has suffered from not having a proper winger in front of him, and that is also down to the Manager to put right. Baines needs Pienaar, Mirallas or McGeady in front of him. Not Barkley or Naismith. If he doesn't improve, Baines should be dropped for Oviedo or Garbutt, or we could even try Baines at Left Wing or put Oviedo there if he doesn't rate Pienaar and McGeady.

I suppose I disagree with the general outlook on this thread which appears to state that Martinez’s problem is that he only has 1 way to play. I think his biggest problem is that we have tried too many things this season and we have moved away from what made us successful last season. It’s fine saying we only have a plan A but to me that is simply not true.

I have seen us use different strikers, play 2 up front, 1 up front and 3 up front. We have tried 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2 etc. I have even seen us using Seamus Coleman as a right winger. (I am not necessarily against this in some games, but nobody can doubt it is a big change).

In trying to do too many things I think we have lost sight at what we are good at. I really think Martinez needs to think about that, more than considering a plan B or C. This has in no small part been down to firstly having a lot of injuries and also having the Europa league disrupting the squad. However if Martinez is serious about taking us to the next level, he needs to be able to cope with these difficulties. I think lots of changing can generally work when players are in form, winning and everybody knows their jobs. You keep a core group of players and then rotate players in the more peripheral roles.

At present there is too much rotation and players are unsure what their roles are. Last season (put simplistically) we had a back 4, two full backs high up the pitch as an attacking threat. We also had one more creative player on one wing (Osman, Peinaar) and on the other side an explosive player (Mirallas/Deulofeu). Barkley generally operated in the number 10 role and Lukaku was the striker.

Defensively we had two central midfield players who’s job it was to fill in the holes left by other players. This season it would be hard to really describe how we have tried to play. If you play Barkley in Central midfield you will get creativity in there, but to acquire a balance you can’t always have your full backs bombing on.

For now, I think we should build the team around Barkley. A lot of the other players are desperately out of form. I think he needs to play centrally, with Barry/McCarthy/Besic behind him.

Is that supposed to be a positive? We have 21 points from 17 games. Last year we had 34

Who said it was a positive? I am responding to the Martinez has been sussed quote, He's hardly been sussed when the majority of teams we have played have failed to win

We have been Sussed mate, and our manager, who may I add I welcomed with open arms, turns. Out to be a very stubborn man, and I pray he gets a grip before it's too late, but aye it's all about opinions at the end of the day,so we will just have to wait and see how the mop flops. X

Warnock has played one game against Martinez as Everton manager yet he's "Sussed" him

West Ham beat City the other week, Does big Sam have them sussed

You said that the only way a manager can suss out how to stop us is if they actually beat us. What if they play for a draw like Swansea and Hull? They got the turgid draws they came for, so they're not a very good example to use

All the opposition need to do to derail us is press high, it's not rocket science. It' not a 'Grand Sussing' or anything.

At the moment we don't have Centre Backs who look comfortable playing the ball, the pressing in midfield means our DMs (unfit first choice (Barry) and eager stand-in who's still not up to speed with the position (Besic)) are kept busy in the centre of the pitch so the can't cover runs forward from the LB/RBs so either they go forward with no cover and get pumped with a long ball back over the top, or they hang back thus castrating our attack with a lack of wing play and balls in.

I really do think that when Stones and McCarthy get back we'll solidify and Baines + Coleman can get back to creating havoc on the wings by overlapping our narrow 'wingers' effectively making a front five when we attack. Just like last year.
