Man City v Everton
No surprises that Tim Cahill came closest to breaking the deadlock last week but it remained intact and while a point at Stamford Bridge gives the fans reason to be hopeful, at Goodison against Wigan it’s back to the frustration which has become the feeling of choice amongst Everton fans this season. For the want of an in-form striker the Toffees sit less than a win away from the relegation zone and are on the brink of going ten league games without tasting victory. The chances were there against Wigan but, not for the first time this season, they went untaken and David Moyes must be seriously scouring the transfer market in search of a mid-season solution.
He’ll have to work from the squad he has for the trip to the City of Manchester Stadium, a venue where the Scot has actually enjoyed some success in recent years. Everton have won there each of the last three seasons and with City often struggling to impose themselves in front of their own fans, there are reasons to believe that this could be a less frustrating 90 minutes of football.
In their last four home games City have scored just once, which helps a side with an average of just one goal per away game, won just once and generally struggled to impose themselves on the opposition. Moyes would rather not stretch Everton’s winless streak to double figures, even with a draw at 13/5, but he’ll need someone, anyone, to show a little more composure in front of goal if they are to win there for the fourth season on the bounce at 4/1. Tim Cahill quite literally heads the list at 8/1 to score first. It’s tricky tipping up any of the strikers given how unwilling they’ve all been to score this season but Jermaine Beckford, with two in his last six, is the man in form and he’s as worthy of a punt as any of them. He’s 9/1 to score last, given that he’s unlikely to start.
It’s been a happy hunting ground of late and given how things have been going so far this season, the Everton happens could do with something to be cheerful about. Despite all their billions, the City camp isn’t exactly bursting with festive cheer at the moment either but then apparently misery does love Kompany. At 4/1 to take all three points, an Everton win could be a happy ending for us all.
