Oxford away 86

Has developed into a bit of an Everton myth this but the truth is actually even worse and more sickeningly “typical Everton” luck. He did take his boots. They were found after the match under the basket which was carrying all the kit/boots. Must have fell out. It’s in Simon Hart’s book “Here We Go”.

Never knew that.
Thats even worse than not taking them lol

It was towards the end of March.
Mimms was in goal for 9 games in the run-in of which we won 6, drew 2 and lost 1.

Southall’s last game before injury was a 2-1 loss at Luton.

At the same time Liverpool won every game as part of a 12-13 straight wins on the bounce.
Oxford was a killer, especially as that lot won at Leicester the same evening I think, mad to say but I hate that season, even when we were great we found a way to lose the double, walking out of the pit after our 2-0 win if you'd told me what would eventually happen i would have laughed in your face 🙄😒👍

Which part of the season did Bobby Mimms replace the injured Nev?
It was irrelevant in terms of winning the League - it was the goals drying up that did for us - 0-0s away at United and Forest as well as failing to score at Oxford. I'd have fancied Nev to have done better against Rush in the Final though based on the Anfield display.

40th anniversary tonight of oxford away in 1986, 40 years on and its still just as sickening, my first away game. Long long drive home that night...
I was there as i remember it was a cold night no roof covering , celebrated as though we had levelled at Barcelona but god did we turn up for the home game it finally clicked

Just got in from work and dug out the book. Lineker is interviewed and says that his boots weren’t packed in the skip and he had to borrow a pair a size too big and he missed 3 or 4 chances. However, Colin Harvey is also interviewed and says this about the boots (Sliding Doors Moment)…”When we were clearing up afterwards, they were there - they had gone right under a pipe…we used to put them under the bench and his must have got knocked beneath. I was going mad thinking they hadn’t packed his boots but we found them after the game”. Killer.

I remember listening to this on my bed as a 13-year-old. Agonising. Radio Two. Dum, dum-du-dum-du-duuuummm!

And the villain of the night - our hero - went on to top score at the World Cup a month later and we never saw him again.

Everton, dat.

Wow that’s a blast from the past. Not heard that for years. Midweek sports special on Radio 2. Used to swirl in and out of reception listening on Medium Wave.

tbf apart from 1 Lineker 1v1, Oxford could have put 2 or 3 past us based on these highlights

They had a couple of good sides around that time. I wasnt at that match but the following year i went. Think they had Dean saunders. Bit like going to the Dell and Southampton around same time. Another tight little ground and good players. Those wallace brothers used to give us a game down there.
