He's the best CB going at this point, I'm really not sure who else is even in the category, but tbh I think it is more down to a fall off in the overall quality of defenders. 10 years ago you had guys like Terry, Vidic, Ferdinand, and Kompany just in the PL. Now Soyuncu is a candidate for the PL best XI. It's fallen way off and so people have this perception that Van Dijk is incredible when it isn't totally clear that he isn't just the best of a bad crop.
