Our window vs our rivals window

This window has been one of the best summers for us in ages. We've offloaded Drenthe, Straq, Cahill & Rodwell from our A-squad. Drenthe was a player that played according to his mood, Straq didn't work here, Cahill (while I love him and what he has given to our club) was on decline and Rodwell has been stamping on the same spot and only played 15 games or so. All in all we've not lost one player that was fundamental to our success or progress. We've kept all our important players and signed back Pienaar.

In addition to the good team we had at the end of last season we've added some major offensive qualities. Naismith has already shown he fits perfectly into the team and that the linkup with Jelavic works as earlier in Rangers.

Mirallas is the new wizard and joker we've lacked for a while. He can score and pass with accuracy.

VOO looks like an improved Rodwell in playingtype. Sure he might not have the same potential as Rodwell, but if you compare them now VOO looks the better one.

Oviedo is a perfect backup and sub for Baines, so we can rest him in cupmatches and when games are already won. He can also play in LM so we can put Pienaar in the middle if needed.

In one summer Moyes have seriously improved the squad without having to spend ridiculous amount of money, like some other teams in the league.

If we compare to the other teams just below the top3, none did a better window that us. Spurs did some whealing and dealing and if they get the group in place they did a good window. Barcodes didn't sign anything, so basically the same team we hammered in the end of last season. Pool did a horrible window. Lots of people going out and not many coming in, the most dangerous one is on loan for a season WITHOUT a buy option.

So a great transfersummer in my eyes. COYB!!!

what do people think about QPR do you think with there signings they will have a shout for europe?

Wouldn't swap any of theirs for ours, of all the players they have signed only a couple that I'd really rate. M'bia could be decent but I can see him having a strop at some point and only a 2 year deal? I think he'll be looking for a way out soon enough. All in all I reckon they'll be a fe fallouts within that squad and I can't see them gelling quick enough to avoid a relegation battle

Yeah, Dempsey's a quality player.

Spurs weakness is in their lack of strikers and their unproven manager.

And they have no defenders, no proper LB, Gallas still at CB, Kaboul??? who has started CB for them today? Its great spunking loads of cash on all sorts of zany attackers, but when you ship goals it is a lot of responsibility to be scoring more every game.

With their signings I think they will have a fight for survival. They've spent money on players without thinking how they will mesh into a team. It's a bit like Chelsea when they got into richness. Signed a heck of a lot of strikers and no defence. You have to build a team from the ground. Doesn't matter if you can score 3 goals in a game if your defenders and goalie let the opposition score 4.

I think we've had a fantastic window. We've got in younger players with bags of potential and off loaded struggling players. Granted I think our reserves are pretty deleted with Jose and the gang gone. I think our latest transfers going to take a while to settle which is fine cause our squad can somewhat deal with it thanks to naisy and pienaar. I think Mirallas is going to settle the quickest then odjidja. I think Oviedo will come in when Gueye and Pienaar are off at afcon.

As for the other teams, I think Tottenham and Arsenal have actually done really well and they just need time to gel before they start performing. I'm not sure about Chelsea yet, they have great options for attacking midfielders but they seem short for CF and defenders. I think they're going to struggle if they injuries in those areas. I think Kagawa is going to be the signing of the season, he's a fantastic player. I also RVP getting injured and just being a massive flop this season. I don't know much about Man City's new players though. I honestly can't see Sinclair getting a good amount of game time then again I thought that about Rodwell and he's had a good start.

I've got mixed feelings about this window.

On the one hand we've done a cracking deal in offloading Rodwell and recruiting a few quality players to fill the team and squad out.

However, there's this mass hysteria about how wonderful the window was and what a great job bill and Dave did however we still operate on a "sell to buy" policy.

If you look at the other clubs who were spending money and recruiting we weren't even in the races. Other clubs and **** clubs at that we spending money without having to sacrifice players to fund it.

I think that expectations have been lowered so far by disappointing windows that evertonians now treat a zero net spend as successful and something to rejoice and rip into the reds for.

I was pleased with the names we recruited but I don't think it's a time for back slapping the likes of bill and elstone at what a brilliant job they have done by not spending a penny whatsoever.

It's not the amount of money you spend, it's the quality of the players you get in and let loose that counts.

I don't know why so many think spurs did a great window. They sold both VDV and Modric, their two most important midfielders. It was those two that enabled Bale and Jennas to rush along the sides since the opposition had to take care of them in the middle. Their new midfielders aren't that class, so now Bale and Jennas won't get those freeways along the sidelines and therefore are reduced in efficiency.

You conveniently forget we don't HAVE any money to spend. When considering that fact, your post essentially says "I wish we could follow the examples set by Leeds and Portsmouth."

Every team has different needs in the transfer window, not just in terms of the type or number of players wanted but also in terms of addressing financial pressures. We addressed ours by restoring Pienaar to our left wing, bringing in two lads who could potentially solve our right midfield/wing problem in Naismith and Mirallas, a young, pacy international to cover Baines, another young international to cover or potentially play alongside Gibson AND two youngsters with potential for the future. We did this by selling one player who we would have kept if finances allowed. Everyone else that left - Straq, McFadden, Cahill, Yobo, Drenthe - NEEDED to leave because they were pulling in wages without offering anything to the squad. In fact, the funds raised from selling Cahill and Yobo apparently paid for Pienaar!

I am delighted we managed all the above on a zero net spend AND without significantly increasing the wage bill. We might even have paid off a couple million of the debt. I'm not remotely concerned we weren't in for the likes of Joe Allen at £15m, or the two Wolves lads who went for a combined £24m, because I didn't watch the game yesterday thinking "If only we could be more like Portsmouth".

Almost all clubs operate on a sell to buy basis these days.

The only alternative is pay lower wages and lose our better players more often in order to have a positive net spend each year. I reckon that would result in a weaker team though.

As much as I admire VDV... he was finished at spurs.. ha hadn't looked interested in ages and needed to move on.
