Got that programme. Would they be allowed to call it the Gay Meadow today I wonder?
No Shrewsbury Town FC moved to the NEW meadow - 1910 it was a carnival fair piece of land where people had enjoyment hence the inheritance of the name Gay Meadow - when I first started in Horticulture we had lessons on how to produce a flower border with a gay appearance to it - It was in the USA later when a movement labeled it self with a name , and the first letters of the movement spelt G A Y - and that's when the word became synonymous in a very big way .... not the original meaning of the word.
It is used now as a less offensive word that was used against them in my era - nothing wrong with that just a shame the real meaning has been lost in that iconic era - I suppose no big deal imo....
the word is less offensive etc some of my work friends were openly gay.....
You were spot on though in the 1990s they had to move as H&S regulations condemned the old ground, and they moved away from the river that often flooded the ground and into the outer city ;)
