....I think there's been a few instances of players withdrawing from U21 tournaments, Erik Dier perhaps. As you say, though, i couldn't imagine a player withdrawing from a World Cup these days because they were getting married, especially if the tournament was at home. How times change.

unfortunately Peter Bonnetti played - known as "The Cat" v West Germany played like Timmy Howard! he was more like the flying pig! that game 2-0 up got beat 3-2
.....yep, if I remember rightly Gordon Banks had food poisoning. Lots of rumours about food being laced. It was around the same time as the Bobby Moore theft accusations.
