Why have most hens egg shells suddenly turned white? Is it something they are or aren’t being fed? Is it something to do with the Chinese (or the French)?

its to do with the breed they use and for battery layers they would use only one hybrid breed so uniformly white egs. Next time you are in the supermarket open a box of free range eggs or organic ones. PS we kept our own chickens for 20 years.

They were free range (or sold as free range). I read, as you say, it's down to breed/genetics that puts the brown pigmentation in the shell. There must be a lot of lighter/white feathered chickens knocking about recently...

we used to breed for egg colour , having dark brown, blue, green and even rainbow.
