37% of americans are obese, 30% of mexicans, 28% of kiwis, 26% of brits, 25% of aussies and 18% of canadians.
In large parts of the western world, overeating is the leading cause of death. It's certainly one of the leading causes of bad health and is vastly more deadly than pretty much any other disease. And it's completely avoidable if you just don't gouge yourself and run about it. These people are choosing to die when it's in their own ability to not do so.
It's a cultural thing, presumably. Japan for instance has almost no obesity despite being a rich developed country with plenty of food available and a population doing mostly office work.
So why in places like america and, to a lesser extent, the other english speaking countries is this greed and lazyness, this pigging yourself until you can't walk and your feet rot off and then you die of a heart attack so common?
Is it just that bad food is so cheap and it's cheaper to eat large quantities than small? Is it that we live a more sedentary, less actvie lifestyle with less manual work and scare stories about peados meaning kids aren't allowed to run around outside any more? Or are the previous generation simply not teaching self control and self respect to their kids?
If a child is obese before they can feed themselves is that child abuse given it will undoubtably take years off it's life?
And what can we do as a country with rising obesity so that we don't become the USA?
And is it fair that so many health care professionals retire due to doing their backs in from having to carry obese patients around?
Discuss.
