37% of americans are obese, 30% of mexicans, 28% of kiwis, 26% of brits, 25% of aussies and 18% of canadians.

In large parts of the western world, overeating is the leading cause of death. It's certainly one of the leading causes of bad health and is vastly more deadly than pretty much any other disease. And it's completely avoidable if you just don't gouge yourself and run about it. These people are choosing to die when it's in their own ability to not do so.

It's a cultural thing, presumably. Japan for instance has almost no obesity despite being a rich developed country with plenty of food available and a population doing mostly office work.

So why in places like america and, to a lesser extent, the other english speaking countries is this greed and lazyness, this pigging yourself until you can't walk and your feet rot off and then you die of a heart attack so common?

Is it just that bad food is so cheap and it's cheaper to eat large quantities than small? Is it that we live a more sedentary, less actvie lifestyle with less manual work and scare stories about peados meaning kids aren't allowed to run around outside any more? Or are the previous generation simply not teaching self control and self respect to their kids?

If a child is obese before they can feed themselves is that child abuse given it will undoubtably take years off it's life?

And what can we do as a country with rising obesity so that we don't become the USA?

And is it fair that so many health care professionals retire due to doing their backs in from having to carry obese patients around?

Discuss.

I despise the obese. Lazy, greedy idiots.

I think we can all agree they're scum. But why are we producing so many of them?

Like 75% of american adults are fat and more than a 1/3 of them are clinically obese which means they're essentially unhealthily fat.

That's a lot. It's like if 1/3 of american adults were drug addicts.

Why has american society failed to this extent and how can we avoid failing the same way?

educate folk on diet, everything in MODERATION is a simple enough rule to follow, however if you eat the stuff that puts on weight all of the time then there's only gonna be 1 result.

There are different metabolisms that process junk food differently though, I can eat the stuff constantly and not gain an ounce. It however appears that I go against the grain and for the majority if they eat cack every day then they'll put on the pounds, if they drink regularly as well then they aren't helping themselves.

ONLY 37% OF Americans are obese.WOW!

75% are fat, tbf. Obese is quite a high bar. You have to take being fat seriously.

Incidentally, 75% of americans are fat and 25% of americans are criminals, thus accounting for everyone.

Which rather explains why they need guns to protect themselves from muggers. Running away is right out.

Poor education and large portion sizes, not to mention awful quality produce. Us Brits are getting just as bad, the more obese people there are the more acceptable it becomes. It's certainly going to kill more people than ISIS.

Cars.

People use their cars to down to the shop to buy a paper these days instead of using the 2 feet they were given. No wonder there is so much laziness and obesity.

And of course the ultimate, which is driving into a fast food joint and not even having to get out of the car to buy the stuff and then consuming the junk food without having to move a muscle.
