I haven't been to NYC all that often so I can't tell you much. Never been to a good bar in NYC though. On the east coast Philly, Baltimore, DC and Boston all have a better bars.

When you've run of money and need to do something cheap/free The High Line in Chelsea is a very cool park. As for places to eat Mexican food is great. Just don't go to any Mexican restaurant that is clean. The filthier the Mexican restaurant the better the food is. NYCs pizza places are decent and you could get 2 large slices anywhere for about $6-8 in the city.

Also if you want to get out of the city for a day you could wake up early and take one of the China Buses which you could pick up next to Madison Square Garden or anywhere in Chinatown for ($10-20) to DC where all the museums are free and so is the national zoo (they have pandas!).

if you like basketball, NBA players sometimes get together in the offseason for games at Rucker Park in Harlem. check it internet for possible games.

Check out some of the steak houses.
the best one I remember was Smith & Wollensky - simply an awesome, world class experience.

The East side is the dirty (as in entertaining) side of town. ;)
