Thats not how it works. Chances come unexpectedly in football. Digne could get injured on international duty for all we know. Its rubbish squad building and sums up the Brands era. Lots of risks and a lack of depth.
He also could not get hurt start 38 games and Niels could play 100 minutes of real football the entire season. This is how you guarantee that he gets time on a pitch and as a team that needs to be looking to the future it is the right move. Digne gets hurt and we have to play Godfrey. If it we finish 10th instead of 8th whatever, we tried to get better.

Having only 1 left back at the club, including the academy, is shambolic planning. Nothing anyone says will convince me otherwise.

Keep him

Every other team in this league other than us will have 2 natural left backs. We dont even have one in our academy anymore!

Its shambolic planning and recruitment.
It isn’t shambolic. He was a free signing when Baines retired. However, he is inexperienced to the point where the managers can’t pick him at LB in the PL so it is pointless keeping him. He needs experience and he is not getting it here.

What we probably need is an older journeyman free signing as cheap cover while Nkounkou gets his experience.

loan him out but add in a return clause (if Digne gets injured) seems like the sensible thing to do? still not ideal for cup matches but it’s important our young talent is able to develop - we don’t have much of it left

This is exactly what we should be doing, if he is ready to challenge for first choice next year that would be great
