Magpies manager Chris Hughton has identified Donovan as an ideal replacement for Hatem Ben Arfa, who is not due to return to action until March after suffering a double leg break against Manchester City earlier this month.
Donovan, 28, is also desired for his versatility as he can play as a striker or in midfield and Hughton is desperate to strengthen his attacking options in January to provide support for Andy Carroll.
Newcastle hope to pip Everton to Donovan’s signature by wrapping up an early deal with both the player and the club over a January loan move.
“He is exactly the signing Newcastle need with Ben Arfa out with a long-term injury,” a Newcastle source told Goal.com UK.
“The boss is worried the team rely too much on Andy Carroll and Donovan has proven that he can hurt defenses in the Premier League.
“It would work really well for the player because he will be guaranteed a game every week and for the club because those three months after Christmas will be vital – we want a mid-table finish.”
