New stadium capacity

Stadium of Light was built in a way extra tiers could be added easily.
Ours wont be as easy due to location and style.
TBH Sunderlands stadium isn't the worst of the newer builds, although the seats are facing the wrong way......

I'm a Sunderland fan and was interested about your new stadium.

How do the fanbase feel about the capacity of 52,000 instead of 62,000? I know it can be extended but that is probably dependent on future safe standing regulations.

In general, were fans confident of filling the bigger capacity or worried about empty seats? I personally think your fanbase is big enough for 62,000.

In 1997, when we moved from a decrepit 22,000 Roker Park to the 42,000 SOL, people were worried where the extra fans would come from but it was exactly the right decision.
I think the effect would be even greater with you so I'm interested in what people think.

Hope we can meet in the Premier League someday soon and best of luck for the season
In post Covid world...if we ever get that far...who knows what spectators per Sq metre rule will be imposed, both in existing and new builds

Think how close you will sit on a aircraft post Covid, that will probably be the limit on sqm level, especially as most venues are open air, versus filtered cabin air are comparable. Plus time in a ground will be less than the average flight

I came to terms with the capacity a while ago, I thought when we started this that 55,000 was the minimum we should be aiming for, but I understand why its a little lower at 52,000. I dont think we would have any trouble filling it. I think the safe standing will come at some point and we will have that great blue wall at the home end, hopefully we will call it "The Kendall End" after Howard.

I think with 52k we're being sensible. Cant remember the exact figures but we currently have around 32,000 STH and a waiting list of over 10,000.

So with 42k STH seats, 7k members & general sale, 3k away fans including in those numbers will be the corporate options that some will take up.

I think we would struggle to fill a 60k+ stadium on a regular basis.

I live hundreds of miles away from Goodison. I stopped going after always standing behind a pole. The fact we have 32,000 STH in such a poor stadium says a lot, nevermind that we fill it 40,000 pre COVID, with some of the worst views in Europe.

I dont think we'd struggle to fill 60,000. I for one would be willing to travel a few hundred miles with a season ticket in a brand new stadiun. It does not surpise me that Goodison has the most local fans. Theres thousands around the country that would be go, decent views are hard to come by

Yes your right, tiers can easily be added in only a few months without having to close any stands. Wouldn't be particularly expensive either compared to extending an old stadium.

Our chairman at the time did a marvelous job, the stadium only cost £19 million to build

Was it not shown on the documentary years ago?
When Peter Reid was boss.
The relegation season.
Roker park far more intimidating, but alas a dump.
The away bit under the cameras was mad, remember queuing for a pie and the server saying ,no,they're reserved for the police....

Same here.
At one time 10_15 years ago tickets were easily available but not now.
Used to decide last minute Friday, phone sister ,drive down, great.

I know there will be provisions for safe standing included.. would that increase capacity by much if it were to be introduced?

Not under current rules, no. Any swap from a seat to safe standing is 1:1. The theory is that its still technically a seat, just one you decide to stand up from. Safely.
