Wow, that is one of the most poorly written "scientific" journals I have ever read.
He starts by saying Methanol is a component of aspartame - this is not true, methanol is a byproduct of aspartame consumption. ***Integrity alert***
He then goes on to describe the dangers of the other 2 components.
1. Aspartic acid - The article doesn't seem to mention that this is a naturally occuring amino acid in humans - every single person in the world creates their own Aspartic acid every day. Still think it is harmful?
2. Phenylalanine - This is classed as an essential amino acid, meaining we don't create our own stocks, we have to consume it. And consume it we do, because without it, we would not have any DNA.
Yes, Phenylalanine can be dangerous for people suffering from PKU. In the same way that peanuts can be dangerous to people with allergies to them. Doesn't mean it's the peanut that is the problem.
Why is the author suggesting that these perfectly natural amino acids are harmful? Without them we would die.
If we were to ignore the obvious flaws in the science and just look at the conclusions, the only one which could possibly be drawn is that excess consumption of aspartame would not be recommended. Probably sage advice. However, drinking 10 bottles of diet coke per day would still not be classed as excess consumption of aspartame.
