Is there any historical precedent to our potential situation?

Has a club this size in a top European league ever been in the middle of a costly new stadium build and been relegated?

We're in unchartered territory here, I think. ?‍

Probably the nearest would be Valencia and the Nou Mestella, in terms of a stadium being unfinished.
The difference was they ran out of money rather than relegation

Not sure. Last I heard, they'd unveiled plans for a reduced capacity of 49k in June but hadn't heard if it was approved.
