I made my first pilgrimage last night. I am based in Germany so going is a special event for me. I visited Goodison four times between 1997 and 2023, so the Seat Unique option is a good one for me in terms of certainty. I went with my best pal, a United fan. He's a football fan, first and foremost, so there was never any question of him jumping up or wearing colours. He suffered through what he considered a really poor United display.
The Seat Unique experience is very good. I was in Section 229 - so no frills. I was nervous about it as a virgin user - but I would highly recommend it for people who can only go now and again. The only criticism I would have is they informed me that I could access my tickets from their app, then sent them to me by e-mail anyway. Now, this was handy - because the e-mails (there were more than one) has convenient share links for me to send to my pal. But I found it a little confusing (why send e-mails if I was supposed to access via the app). They did inform me that I should wait to download them until I was in the UK. So they had the fan abroad in mind. On the day of the match, my downloaded app "updated" - which threw me slightly. My friend's took a little longer to do so, but it followed suit, so I relaxed. I was a little on edge about getting in to the stadium without issues.
At the turnstiles, my fears seemed realised when he could not seem to get in. So we asked a friendly steward. She was lovely, tried to get the sensor to read his phone but then turned the phone around. He - and she - had been pressing the screen of the phone to the terminal. This is logical. We do this for everything. But this technology seems to require the back of the phone. You learn something new every day. I have to say, it made us feel like idiots, but I think this is a communication issue. I haven't seen any instructions anywhere about how to enter the stadium turnstiles and use your phone in this manner - and I am a trained technical writer. But I digress. Once we know how it works, we'll never look like idiots again...ok, maybe we'll look like competent idiots.
The stadium itself is magnificent. I was on an Old Trafford tour on the Sunday and I have to say that is a club in decline. I will post about that at another time, but we have a stadium that is the envy of the world. We really must capitalise on it and put a team on the pitch deserving of it. The sightlines are marvelous. A few United fans were chucked out after the goal when things kicked off a bit away from us, but 229 seemed to be mainly Irish Everton fans and other foreigners. The flags at the start were marvelous, but I fear they need to learn a trick or two from Germany and leave them up. Yeah, it will block views but ultras aren't bothered by that. Too many old arses who will never sing are in that section when they should be with the likes of me in 229. Do this and it'll stand comparison to the ArenaAufSchalke, which it already brings to mind in its German-style compact enormity.
There's plenty that must be done to brand the stadium as Everton's. Right now, it's too corporate and sterile. Paint the exposed concrete and the safe standing rail seat bars. Hang huge banners over the "glass" end of the stadium. The only blue you see is the seats, and that gets covered up when it fills.
We have a huge opportunity to rejoin the elite. The old tour guides who took us around Old Trafford know that stadium is crumbling and were mortified to ask for money for people to take photos in their media room. The Sir Jim effect. He truly has colonised that club.
We need to show the confidence as a club to drive back into the elite. It's possible with the right ambition.
