I wouldn't have thought of Benitez as a modern, progressive coach but that may simply be a combination of ageism and ignorance on my part.
There are several managers I'd appoint over him if they were available, but equally many I would not.
I wouldn't judge his time in China as a negative necessarily, it is a fantastic life experience and I don't think someone can be criticised for wanting to avail of it, when combined with the money on offer.
If he does get the job, I hope things settle down for us. I don't really care about his past or what he said. If he is fully committed to the task of managing Everton, then that's all I'd ask if him as I would of anyone else.
There is some argument to suggest that he could bring a particular level of detachment to us that others may not, and the freedom to do things that would bring, that would benefit us.
I understand the opposition, but it may be an inch thick as well as a mile wide.
