Neville Southall

It's ironic really that Southall's biggest problem has been he's never abandoned the idea of Nil Satis Nisi Optimum. No matter how far we may have fallen behind the rest,he's always maintained we should be challenging for leagues and trophies...he thinks like us, and doesn't toe the party line like Graeme "be careful what you wish for" Sharp.

Not having Southall round the club day to day letting the academy players and new signings know what's expected of them and what the fans expect is criminal.
It's a problem for him in the sense of him not being welcomed (given a job) by the club, but it's far from a problem in the wider sense. He has high expectations.

If he ran for parliament, I would vote for him, always speaks sense does our Nev!

Before I get vilified I just want to state that Neville is my number 1 footballing hero - however this:

"Why not make the Premier League support the other leagues and grassroots football more. For one thing, I’d like to see a safety pool for clubs in trouble."

Does not make much sense. It kind of says to the owners of lower division clubs that you can take liberties to risk promotion, knowing that there is a nice comfortable safety net below you.

Basically the rule should be that clubs should be able to spend what they want but to be able to enter the next season's competition any debt accrued and secured to the club needs to paid off. So the owners have two options, run the club as a business and don't go over budget or if they do they have to reach into their own pockets to pay it off. That way worst comes to the worst a club can only have one season's worth of debt attached to it.

I think ( pure guess) that he meant the safety pool would have saved e club dropping out of existence. Don’t give a bean to the owners who bankrupted it, buy the club and give it to the fans.

And then if whoever you gift it to balls things up do you go back to the pool of infinite money?

As hard as it is clubs need to work within their means. There are plenty of clubs who can't generate anything like the revenues that the likes of Bury or Bolton can but they don't get ran into the ground and look for bailouts. If a club can't financially compete at a certain level without risking financial ruin then it needs to accept that and operate within a budget that perhaps is more suited to a lower level.

Being relegated a couple of times and continuing to exist at a lower level of the pyramid is infinitely better than going bust while failing to get promoted.

Just popped up in my YouTube list... I think it's from that Michael Owen Soccer Skills show. Not only some decent coaching tips, but Owen being an absolute bell and right at the end Big Nev cuts him to size.

What a tit Owen is, liked that from Nev at the end though, can't believe we've never had Southall at Finch Farm over the years, even if he was just with the academy, someone like him teaching a young goalkeeper would be brilliant

You look at Wales Rugby Union with Neil jenkins as their best ever goalkicker. Got given the kicking role and since he's been going that Wales' goalkicking has been scintillating.

When you have someone who's such an expert on something specialist, no matter what sport, you get them in as a coach in that respective area if possible. Some players get where they are through hard work, but sometimes they're just a specialist and know exactly what to do.

We've had goalkeeping problems ever since nev retired and never thought of getting him to help.

Exactly, Southall is an expert in what he knows, doesn't matter that he's the size of a cow it's the knowledge he can pass on to young keepers and even Pickford that would be priceless, I'm sure if Everton rang him he'd be here to help for sure, especially if it was to work with the under 23s and younger
