Probably because it was in a negative context. Footballers getting involved with politics when they have no right to.

Maybe it's just because I'm American, and granted our current state of affairs is teetering around the f***ed mark, but this is a genuinely weird/daft comment.

He's just using slightly unusual similes as a way of framing the reasonable, and much shared, points he's making.

Alarming? Bizarre? Mad? Such strong language suggests an overly strait-laced view of the norm.

Well, he's Welsh, right? Given that, his points are considerably well taken.

To me he comes off as entirely genuine, although maybe quick to speak his mind. I was reading recently, here or elsewhere, that he Ws being considered as player-manager before he made a rude (but not mean) comment in the parking lot to another player. The chairman overheard it and said, more or less, "looks my shortlist is down to one."
