I've always disliked that phrase , if somebody is a socialist and happy to pay a higher proportion of their own wealth to help others I don't understand why it's something to be criticised or mocked . It's about having a social conscience and responsibility surely ?

If somebody paints themselves as a socialist or liberal but hides a fortune offshore or in dodgy movie schemes then absolutely they deserve criticism but having earned wealth but being happy to use some of it to support the less fortunate is aureky something to be applauded ?

I always thought champagne socialist was about someone claiming or hs been working class and ocne they get the money mixing with the upper class etc but still trying to claim to be working class and one of the people?

Yeah It's somebody who enjoys what others see as incompatible lifestyle , claiming to be a socialist but enjoying the 'high life ' . My point was being wealthy doesn't prevent somebody having liberal leanings or convictions .

I've always thought it was just a lazy insult trotted out by the right when they don't want to engage with the actual issue.

Served nev drinks when I worked in a hotel over here in Northern Ireland. He was over for the milk cup youth tournament with the Wales team. I introduced myself as an Evertonian and he was really sound guy very personable. I was chuffed cos you here stories about people meeting their boyhood heroes who turn out to be pricks but in my case big nev was the opposite.
