Not being funny but why are these things always called World Series when the world is not competing? As far as I can make out this is various US colleges competing

Good point. Arguably, the Little League World Series is the only true World Series as the US winner plays the international winner in the final.
“World Series” was coined by a journalist to promote the championship series between the American League and National League winners.
