Very concerned now over this lad's long term future. Joint injuries like this are a major concern when he's only played a handful of senior games in football.

I asked last night: is it the same leg he did his ankle on?

He's a physical defender. His tackles are good. I remember when he broke into the team under Moyes and he near put Bale in the Paddock with a fantastic fair but no nonsense challenge. He's not lacking in that side of defending. And he's a safe pair of hands linking up play.

His big issue now is that when he gets turned, that is pretty much it: we're in bother down that flank. However, we were in a lot of bother last season because we had poor CBs who couldn't do a covering role. Coady and Tarkowski change the scenario markedly. Ive lost times the number of times Coady has tidied up on the right side of defence this season already.

We'll be fine. And as I said above and in the Coleman thread, Seamus is much more aggressive attacking wise than Patterson.

The defence as a whole will be able to plug holes better. Gueye will be a big factor in this. If Coady or Tarkowski need to shift over, they will know that Gana won't be too far away, and even if he is, he'll see what's happening and be doing his best to help out his defence. Even Iwobi has nicked a couple of balls in that central defensive area already this season.

It's a world away from Andre Gomes doing nothing other than pretending to be the worlds left back when trying to thwart an opposition attack.

Praying that this is one of those where it’s a medial strain or something and he’s back in a few weeks. I can’t take another ACL injury ruining another Everton career before it’s barely started.

He was never a good defender, no.

He was very good in a man-marking role - as was pointed out- when asked to take on that responsibility. In general play, not great defensively. In his early days, he had a touch of dynamism about himself going forward, too, but technically he was always second rate. He had and has a very good attitude for a player of his status, but he has basically taken his talent to its limit which is to his credit. Right now, and for half a decade now, that level should not and has not been good enough for an ambitious Premier League team.
Coleman never a good defender? Not remotely having that.

Not sure which leg, but it's a knee injury this time. It depends how serious it is. If it's an ACL then yes, there is obvious long term concern but let's hope it's not as serious as that.

ACLs don't ruin careers anymore, especially for young fit lads. Ageing pros who have lost the desire to get back it may be an issue but the ACL injury is now 100% fixable in (I'm guessing here) 99% of cases
