One of the problem with our midfield is the lack of guile.
Barry, Gueye, McCarthy and even Barkley for all their individual qualities are not clever inventive players, nor are they midfielders to set the tempo for the rest of the team.
Gibson at his best was such a player, but I this that ship has long since sailed.

I think we will be signing a midfielder and when you think of the kind of player we need, think Strootman rather Besic or any of those mentioned above. We need a midfield general and we don't have one.

The Besic hype has always been overdone in my opinion. A Gana Besic midfield would be similar to what we saw against Swansea two weeks ago with McCarthy. None can create, which is exactly what we need there with Barkley offering more drive/less creativity as our no10.

Think I slightly disagree pal.

It in my opinion would mean the team all of a sudden is more mobile with no Barry. Meaning as long as Jagielka has a quick replacement as well that we could then push up as a team an extra 10/20 yards. Win the ball back higher up the pitch, break quicker etc. What it would mean though, is perhaps playing a creative type on one wing (?????), and then Bolasie on the other to compensate for the lack of guile from a Besic and Gueye pairing. A proper goalscoring #10 like Sigurdsson and then Lukaku. We can dream hey?

I can think of one good game he's had, that was city in the Cup. Every other time he is erratic and loses the ball too much. I would like to see a sustained run in the team though and see that the city game was not a fluke.
