I cannot let this criticism of
Moyes go without reminding those with a selective memory (and chief amongst those were fans who criticised were those who we actually at the game - & for their complete lack of understanding for tactics). Noted that I accept your arguments about
Moyes being "defensive" sometimes in his mindset but you can make a case here without acknowledging what ACTUALLY happened in this game.
Firstly we started with this line-up
Howard
Neville, Yobo, Stubbs, Lescott,
Osman, Carsley, Fernandes Arteta,
Anichebe Beattie
Basically we were 4-4-2 with a number of absentees: Johnson, Cahill & McFadden chief amongst them. So point 1: Team selection was forced upon him. The bench was not loaded with game changers - Hibbert, Naysmith, Vaughan basically.
2. Spurs played us off the park in the first half. Arteta got an equaliser on the brink of half-time.
3. Moyes changed it up - Anichebe came off - we went 4-5-1 & in the second half we were at least Spurs equal - so it could be said that - for the most part - the tactic worked.
4. Late on - with nothing much in the way of options (ok, Vaughan if you will) Stubbs was carrying an injury (you will see he didn't play the next two games), Fernandes took a knock. What did you expect? Vaughan to do the job? It's all too easy to say "oh well he brought Hibbert on" - what else was he supposed to do? He didn't remove Fernandes for Hibbert for any other reason than he had to. Obviously it backfired in terms of Spurs getting a late winner. So, naturally the crowd reacted (badly).
