Moyes: "maybe the supporters don't know and expect more"

"I wasn't hurt by the reaction to the Wigan defeat last week but everything seemed to come to a head. For some reason the the fans seemed to think my contractual position was the reason for that result. So was my position the reason for the Manchester City result? I know what we have to work with and the boundaries restricting where we can go as a football club. I'm the one who actually knows all that and maybe the supporters don't know all these things and they are expecting something more from us. When we went down to 10 men on Saturday I made a couple of substitutions that weren't popular, even though I felt it was right to keep us in the game. I hope people now realise I got that right. I know I was being questioned about it and I hope those people are now big enough to turn round and say: 'He got it right.' Last week didn't influence whether I stay or leave at the end of the season and this result won't either. I've always said where we finish will determine what happens. I hope I get respect for having been here 11 years. I'll always give Everton that respect and I hope that will now be mutual."

I'm not sure Moyes gets the reason why we were all so frustrated after the Wigan defeat. We were all angry because:

- it was yet another Very Important Match defeat to go along with 11 years of limp cup & derby defeats.
- we failed to ignite some urgency after half-time to at least give the fans some encouragement.
- the players seemed lost against relegation battlers in an FA Cup Quarterfinal, yet happen to turn it on for the next league match against more glamorous opponents.

And again, in every post-match interview, we get the sob story about how limited our resources are. We know this! But going on about it (and our captain stating we're actually over-achieving) doesn't exactly give our players the superiority-complex they need to win the big games.

Also, by stating he thinks that it's the fans who don't get it, and that we should give him more respect, he invites the criticism that he thinks he's bigger than the club.

I don't intend for this to be an anti-Moyes thread. Clearly he's doing very well with what he's got, and we're in a strong league position pushing for Europe. But the one big criticism (that we lose the biggest games in pathetic fashion) doesn't seem to have been answered by his statement here.

For me to be 100% convinced Moyes is right for us for the next few years, I'd like him to address this issue (and without going on about how we don't have the money to compete in the big games).

How do yous see it?

We're a better team than wigan, with better, more experienced players playing at home in frotn of a big crowd.

Purely in terms of finances, our players make considerably more money in wages, as does our manager and they cost more in transfers (both gross and net) to get them here.

It's not our history and league wins that should have us beat wigan, it's our current status.

It wasn't a reaction to the Wigan game alone. It was reaction for the very poor perfomances Everton have put out this season and as Wigan was the only chance for us to even have relative success this season. Now the season truly is over and what could've been a platform to built on is lost. He basically never wins better teams and mostly only draws against lesser teams. He is one of the most highly paid managers in the world but I don't really see him bringing us that much value. He also seems to be holding the club, the players and the fans for ransom. We'll prolly lose three games in a row now unless he gets his 'underdog' thing going but the thing is that a few astute signings aside he really doesn't have much going for him. Even Martinez has mored from a*****d. I know Moyes is an angry old man who would need a proper chairman to sort him out instead of this bull****. Get Levy on ffs.

He doesn't get that 18 years without a trophy is like walking round with a hair-shirt and that him saying stuff like 'Evertion were nothing in the PL before I came' (or words to that effect) just makes things more irritating

In other words, he hasn't got a clue about Everton - and he's not arsed either, because it's always been about Moyes and what's best for Moyes' image to the wider world.

Agree with you to be honest, also when people are rightly or wrongly turning against you and your decisions, whether those decisions are right or wrong.. Slating the fans ability see whats going on isn't going to get them on side.
Respect is earnt and imo you lose some every time you ask for it.
Having said that, he's going to leave with my respect and admiration for the work he's done but I don't think he's going to win any fans over saying things like that.

Agreed. It was the verbal equivalent of the finger.

Moyes get,s it alright hence the response but it,s late to bring up lack of resources that should have been done years ago in public. I have no problem excepting moyes threw the kitchen sink at Bill in private but they both played a part in a means to an end.

100% agreed. In fact we should ban Moyes from ever using that excuse ever again.

If we total all the finance stats of the last 11 years (turnover, profit, net-transfer spend, smallness-of-debt etc) we will comfortably be in the top 10, maybe even top 8. Final league positions of 6th or 7th with no cup return in 11 years isn't what any reasonable person would call over-achieving. We're doing 'just about right' for our level of finances.

I've done it mate, we're not.

Any manager above non league level that drops a player like Gibson for a player (?) like Neville demands questioning. WTF is wrong with this club, the hierarchy seem to believe they are above question by the fans who pay the money. Peoples Club my arse.
