Let me ask you a question: whats the point of hoping for a good year next year if we are thankful we arent going to be in Europe next season? Is Europe NOT the aim of the entire team? And, if they do well again next year and qualify for Europe, should we expect that season to be a throwaway as well?

I just dont get the point of 'well we wont have to deal with Europe next year, so thats a bonus'. If we are going to be utter garbage in the league when we qualify for Europe and we are thankful for not qualifying for Europe the following year, whats the point of trying to qualify for Europe?

There's no contradiction. It's not saying that EL is bad per se, just that we need to step out next season and iron things out squad wise with some restructuring and then we can get involved with Europe again with more confidence that it wont screw our PL season up.

The manager and team will have had the experience of that EL/PL schedule and we can approach it more realistically WHEN we qualify next season.

Put an actual footballer alongside him and hes peerless.
He cant distribute the ball or move out with it to a required standard. That's just the plain truth of the matter.
Jagielka is a meat and potatoes CB; no frills, no football really. A good stopper.

He should be retained, but it's crucial we get two CBs playing that can play football and not just rely on Stones.

Oh right, I was under the impression that defenders were meant to defend, silly me forgetting that Jags must be bad cos he doesnt do stepovers.

Defend as a basic minimum, yes. But it's not enough.

Jagielka cant do that for periods these days also. His form in the period up to Christmas was largely shocking.

We need another CB in, I'm sure you agree?

No, I dont agree, the entire squad and staff failed pretty much until around 6 weeks ago.

But sure, pin it all on Jags and not a total lack of footballing knowledge from the bald Spanish fella.

Who says it isn't enough? Maybe under Martinez's system our defenders are expect to do a lot more, but look at the likes of Chelsea.

Terry and Cahill / Zouma may sometimes get forward, but they're much more akin to your defender of older than the modern variant.

That poor feller had a full head of hair until the Plotters started hounding him. I hope they're satisfied with that, because they never got his scalp.
