His job is to bring fit and quality players in. Did he do that on the evidence so far this season?

Kean looks class, the rest I wouldn't buy in a firesale.

Is right. Brands has critically contributed to our poor start to the season. It is a poor start given the return from the team’s we’ve faced. Last night we lost because we don’t have anyone to put the ball in the net. Kean should’ve been ready to play from the start of the season and that would have been possible if he’d come in earlier and had a proper pre-season with us. Brands was peeing around trying to get value when in that position in particular we need quality whatever extra couple of million we have to pay to get it.

Late signings - but quality signings last season = eventual good season
Late signings - and barely functional signings this season = danger

Imagine blaming the guy convincing good players to join Everton for underperforming. That's firmly in the coach's remit, no?
Besides Kean, who was good that he recruited this season?

He did more than offset Kean's signing btw with the sale of Gueye.

But you have to take into account what the coach has to work with, no? Imagine if the guy tasked with upgrading the playing personnel helped the coach put out a fit for purpose team from the start of the season....!

Dave you say 'besides Kean' but he's only played as much as the other new signings anyway. Sidibe not at all. So what are you actually basing this on?

You were calling Mina crap last year despite him being unfit and subsequently out of the team for most of the season, but then performed well whenever he was on the pitch anyway. You were also slagging off Bernard before he even got a run in the team.

Just confirms that you always draw some mad conclusions in your head far too early purely to fit your narrative.

Errr.. so you're saying that even the team that started last night should be losing 2-0 to Aston Villa?

No mate.

....oh dear, much too early to assess the new players. Generally speaking, the players Brands has brought in have been our best players. It’s early days for Brands but it’s still very encouraging compared to the Walsh era. Mind you, that’s not saying much.

Anyway.. here's the crux of the matter for me:

Brands has brought in good players consistently since he's arrived. The fact that a number of them arrived 'late' in the summer doesn't excuse the fact that the club never seem to do enough preparation in pre season. We always seem to begin the new season no where near full tilt and people wonder why our early season form is ropey at best before dipping significantly by November.

By the time we finally get our act together the season is already two thirds over. That, to me, is simply down to the coaching and not the recruitment.

Let's face it - Silva stumbled into that 'best XI' that we saw at the back end of last season and by then it was too little too late.

No, I’m saying with better finishers bought and starting we’d not have lost the game last night. It’s not like our lack of finishers was a new or unknown problem. The summer activity should have prioritised fixing it.

Most of our pre season games involve squad players and under 23's - no wonder our starting 11 are gassed.

Kean has been class what little we've seen. The others besides Sidibe we ave seen have looked bang average...which we knew anyway.
