Was watching some of his goals for west brom and most of them were in transition. He's a brilliant counter attacking player and I feel to get the most out of him we need to alter our style otherwise we should sell him next month as hes shocking with his back to goal and his movement is poor too.
There is no doubt that you only have to look at the lads record, he knows where the goal is. However there is no doubt that as you say, his general play with his back to goal is shockingly poor. He doesn't look happy at the moment. Last year his grin lit up the stadium, nowadays he just looks frustrated whilst on the pitch.
We have two options here. Either a) play to our record signings strengths and pick a team to support him or
b) continue to play in the system we currently are and watch rom struggle even more
If it is an b that Roberto wants to go down with his high possession based play, then it really does make you wonder why he went for rom. At 10m cheaper he could have got bony who is boss at playing with his back to goal and bringing others into play.
As is it something has to change as we are not getting the best out of record signing and ultimately the team.

Now we know more about RM's personality it appears that his insistence on buying Lukaku was probably a reflection of his stubborness in getting want he wants in the face of evidence that might have questioned whether it was the correct use of the money available to him in the summer. That said there were very strong rumours at the start of 2014 that we were going to be in the driving seat when it came to buying Bony in the summer. That fizzled out, maybe because of reported complications in Bony's financial arrangements, or maybe because RM got the nod early on that Lukaku could be bought.

lukaku was always first choice.

this signing is starting to p*ss me off tbh. clubs all around the world must envy the fact we have him as our striker and he should be a utter beast for us, but we're playing crap, he's not doing too well himself and our style is just all wrong.

just want him to start smashing in goals all over the shop sharpish and propel us to CL. we could do wonders with that extra finance to add to our current squad.

The simple problem is people feeding him.

There is only mirallas good enough on the wings to do so and even then we need 2 more forward thinking players to come in and tee up lukaku.

Ok his movement and touch have been off a bit to be fair, but he needs service. We don't even create chances.

Forget the damn price tag, if we don't supply our strikers with chances then they won't score.

We need to be more creative and force issues. Simples.

He doesn't play well with Naismith playing off of him. Naismith is great but he doesn't feed Rom, he uses him as a foil.

Rom's best period of form was when Mirallas came back from injury and Naismith was still out. Kev knows how to link up with Rom, and the two bagged loads of goals and assists between them in a handful of games.

People moan at Lukaku because it's easy to call him lazy and be done with it. But look a bit closer and think a bit harder and it's easy to see that the problem is much bigger than that. He's doing what he can, but ultimately strikers need a bit of assistance, and no one in the current team is playing to suit, assist or generally get anything out of him.

My hope is that he and RM are using this season to develop his all-round game a bit for the long-term. It's a joint thing that they're both in on and they both know they won't get the best out of him but it'll be worth it down the line. Perhaps even the same with Barkley and playing him wide.

RM's idea is that you can get top 4 without spending crazy cash. That rests on developing young players - maybe this season we're seeing the tough slog of effectively being a side in training.

This is backed up a bit by vital/knockout games like in Europa being an arena where Martinez is happy to put that aside and play to strengths (Wolfsburg away for example). Makes sense I think. We'll see though eh.

So lazy, really annoying me now, the amount of time he takes to get back on side at times is criminal, the new Yakubu but without the goals

What's the point of him getting back on side anyway, if no one plays a ball he can run onto, ever?

Only time he gets any space is when he moves to the flanks to get the ball, and he shouldn't have to, not for the full 90 minutes.

We're wasting him. Something needs to change, NOW. He was so good for us last season, playing to his strengths, it's unbelievable how much we've gone backwards.

It's understandable with that shower across the park - at the end of the day they lost a world class player and didn't replace him. We've lost pretty much no one, and yet look a fraction of the side we were 12 months ago.
