Nothing wrong with wanting to spread the fee, as I recall the last time we paid a big fee in full for a striker he got injured in his second season for a year and ended up being sold further on for a pittance. Do we really want to gamble £24m in one go and pray it won't happen again?
What's the difference though, we pay it now or we pay it later, paying it now is not an increased gamble.

The only way this makes sense is if
a.) We're broke, the Arteta/Rodwell/Fellaini money has disappeared and will never reappear

or

b.) We are planning another big signing this season and need as much cash on hand as possible to make it happen.

If he gets injured after 10 minutes the full fee will still be payable. Merely cash flow and possibly FFP regs being thought of.
