LIVERPOOL, England -- Liverpool is giving away free tickets to youngsters accompanied by a paying adult in the latest bid by the team's American owners to win over supporters.

Boston Red Sox and Liverpool owner John Henry is trying to repair the Premier League club's frail relationship with fans after buying the team in October from the unpopular Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr.

The free tickets are available to fans under the age of 17 when an adult buys a $32 ticket for the final Europa League group stage match against Utrecht next Wednesday.

With the team already through to the knockout phase, Liverpool might have struggled to fill its stadium without the offer.

Chairman Thomas Werner says it is a "small gesture of our appreciation of the welcome we have been afforded so far."

Their owners are spending tons of money on the Boston RS this winter so they certainly could use the money that those tickets might bring.

I wonder if they will do this with any league games? It seems a good way to ingratiate yourself to the fans.

They've struggled with attendance in the Europa. They had 33k for Napoli and 24k for Steaua. Imagine how few would attend a pointless final group stage fixture this side of Christmas?

It's common sense. They'll have bums on seats that they otherwise wouldn't have had which will save face and there's every chance them fans who otherwise wouldn't have attended will purchase once in the stadium.

Cleverly and obviously promoted/disguised as a goodwill gesture.

This.

Citeh, Villa, Spurs have all done this too.

Additionally....its shows how many "hardcore" fans the clubs have really. The ones that dont bother going are the ones that think the Europa League is shiote but would be at every Champs League game if they were in that.

I've heard that a lot of the Red scousers complain that they can't get tix to the games because A) They're too expensive and B) A lot of seats are taken up by package companies that cater to Europeans. Do you guys hear this from your mates? I would think something like this a few games a year for the league would help them with their local fanbase.

Or the ones that cant get tickets could (shudder at the thought) buy one for one of these european games

- their great nights at anfield these european nights

Whats happened to that infamous "waiting list" of theirs they keep going on about?

Objects in the mirror may appear larger than they actually are...
