A generous Liverpool fan used Christmas savings to buy a homeless man tickets to seeEverton .

In a heartwarming Facebook post, Ross Jenkins wrote of how “instead of spending money on stupid things at Christmas (like cards and expensive food)”, he bought his homeless friend, Darren, tickets to see the Blues.

The two became friends after Ross passed Darren every day on his way to work.

He would buy him coffee and the pair would “banter” about football – supporting rival teams.

Using money saved over Christmas, Ross described the moment when he told Darren about the match, saying:

“When I told him, he burst out crying and gave me the best hug ever.

“We had a great time at the match and he was so grateful (he even offered to buy the coffee this time).”

The post goes on to explain Darren’s tough ordeal.

It said: “Darren used to have a job, and a girlfriend, but he lost all that after his girlfriend died and he went into depression. Now he lives on the streets in Liverpool .”

But the note ends on a high, revealing how the Everton fan is now off the streets.

It continues: “Anyway, the reason I’m posting this today is that Darren is no longer on the streets.

“He’s got a council flat and is working part time.

“Last week he had me round for dinner. I’m so proud of him.”

Ross ended his message, which has been shared heavily on social media, by encouraging others to show the same kindness to others.

He wrote: “I posted this story to show you that a little bit of kindness can go so far and help get someone on the right track again.

“I used to drink coffee with Darren on the streets, then I did it at Goodison Park , and now we drink it in his flat.”

When I speak to people about the people of Liverpool, I say to them that the bad one's are some of the worst you'll come across, but the good one's are the best you'll meet, make a friend with some one from Liverpool and you'll have one for life There's a line in the Gerry Marsden song Ferry across the Mersey that goes along the lines of " We don't care were you come from boy we will never turn you away" and I believe that to be true.
